Empower Recovery Through Lived Experience

Mental Health Peer Workers draw on their own lived experience of mental ill health, either as a consumer or carer, to support others on their recovery journey. Peer workers bring empathy, understanding, and hope to their roles, helping others navigate mental health services and build resilience. They work in a variety of settings, including public, private, and community-managed services, offering support that is grounded in shared experience.

This course is designed for people with lived experience who are passionate about supporting others and want to use their lived experience to make a meaningful impact in the mental health sector. Whether you're looking to formalise your existing peer work role or begin a new career path, this qualification provides the skills and recognition to work professionally in peer work roles.

Throughout the course, you’ll develop a range of practical and interpersonal skills, including: applying peer work practices in mental health settings; promoting self-advocacy and wellbeing; working effectively in trauma-informed care environments; using lived experience to support others; contributing to the continuous improvement of mental health services; understanding diversity and cultural safety; and participating in workplace health and safety. You’ll also complete a minimum of 120 hours of work placement, giving you hands-on experience in real workplace settings.

Important: Peer work is deeply personal and emotionally engaging. It’s important that learners are in a place of recovery where they feel comfortable sharing their own stories and hearing the experiences of others. The course includes content that may be emotionally challenging, so personal resilience and readiness are essential.
