Tutor Adult Literacy Learners (TALL) - Get the confidence and skills you need to become an Adult Literacy Tutor.

This online skill set gives you the knowledge and practical skills to support adults in building their reading, writing, and maths skills. It’s free for Tasmanian residents. For people outside Tasmania, the course costs $575.00, plus $1855.00 if you choose to complete the assessments.

In this course, you will learn about :

  • How adults learn and what can make learning more challenging.
  • How to identify individual learning needs and plan activities to suit those needs.
  • How to support people to reach their literacy and numeracy goals.
  • Evidence-based strategies and resources for teaching reading, writing, spelling and maths in adult contexts.
  • Adaptive technologies that can assist learners with specific challenges.
  • Working effectively within organisations, including WHS, teamwork, communication, policies and procedures.

The course runs online over 10 weeks and includes readings, videos, podcasts, discussion boards, and webinars with teachers and guest speakers. You should expect to spend about 10 hours per week studying and completing learning activities.

After the 10 weeks of learning, you will have another 8 weeks to complete your assessments.

To get the most out of this course, you will need sound digital skills and a good level of reading, writing, maths, and communication skills (around ACSF Level 3). You’ll also need to work with a supervisor who has expertise in adult language, literacy and numeracy development. If you don’t have one, your TasTAFE teachers can take on this role.

For the practical assessment tasks, you can work with real adult LLN learners or use the case studies and role-play scenarios provided in the course. This flexibility ensures you can still gain valuable, hands-on experience, even if you’re not currently tutoring.

When you finish:

  • If you complete the assessment process, you will receive a Statement of Attainment
  • If you complete the learning only (without formal assessment), you will receive a Statement of Attendance

This course teaches you how to support the literacy and numeracy skill development of others. If your goal is to improve your own literacy, numeracy and communication skills, consider the following courses:
