Supporting more diversity in leadership in Tasmanian workplaces
Published on: 15 Mar 2024
25 Tasmanians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds today (Friday 15 March) started a six-month program supporting them to become leaders in the community.
The budding leaders are embarking on the Diverse Leadership Program, a tailored training program developed by the Multicultural Council of Tasmania (MCOT), TasTAFE, and Migrant Talent Connector to increase the diversity of leaders in Tasmanian workplaces.
Speaking at the launch of the training program at TasTAFE’s Clarence Campus today, MCOT CEO, Lee Wilson, said the program supported the organisation’s vision of a diverse workforce.
“The aim of the program is to create a workforce that is a reflection of the diverse communities in which we live with cultural diversity represented at all levels of business.
“It’s important that diversity in the workforce also includes those in management and decision-making positions.
“MCOT is extremely proud to be partnering with TasTAFE for the second year of this exciting program.
“It truly demonstrates the level of commitment across the sector in supporting the diverse communities which now call Tasmania home,” Mr Wilson said.
MCOT and TasTAFE developed the tailored leadership program in 2023 with a focus on management skills like goal setting and planning, conflict management, accountability, team building and negotiation.
The 2023 program was a success with more than 20 talented Tasmanians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds completing it.
TasTAFE worked with MCOT to refine the program for 2024, incorporating 2023 participants’ feedback.
This has resulted in a shorter, 6-month program with an increased focus on practical workshops where budding leaders can put what they are learning into practice.
The program is funded by the Tasmanian Government through Skills Tasmania.
