TasTAFE developing next generation of trade trainers

21 Tasmanian industry specialists have recently begun their journey with TasTAFE to become fully qualified trainers. The Developing Industry Trainers Program is allowing industry experts in their field to learn the skills they need and be supported through a fully funded pathway to completing a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

As well as allowing employers to upskill their team members to meet training needs, the course is a great way for individuals to take their first step towards training and assessing in the VET sector – complementing their industry experience and current employment.

After 50 years in industry, program participant Chris saw the course as a great way to give back:

“My interest is more about getting involved in some Certificate III and IV elements of the Mechanical Services Plumbing discipline and to pass on some of the design, application and commissioning knowledge gained over the past 50 years, it is not about money or employment, TasTAFE and the industry put together a great Training program for me back in the 70’s and I would like to contribute as I retire.”

The program is fully funded through the Tasmanian Government’s Energising Tasmania initiative. It is designed for workers in advanced manufacturing, civil construction, automotive, plumbing and electrotechnology fields.

Through an intensive and engaging model of delivery, participants will learn everything they need to know to attain for Certificate IV in Training and Assessment – in a highly supported learning environment. While they’re all there for the same thing, every participant entered the course with their own motivations for getting their Certificate IV:

• “After having a great experience during my time at TAFE with my teachers, I would love to give back the same way. I was lucky to continue friendships after TAFE, and believe the teaching staff at that time really guided me. I hope to be able to give back.” Participant Kane said.
• “To be able to further my skills as a trainer and assist new trainees in the workplace.” Jordan said.
• “Be able to assess and administer trainees within the company, which would allow them to be qualified in process plant operations, as I was when I started in the industry” Ashley said.
