Following seven years in a career in marketing, Emma Bennett realised that the business her and her husband manage, and they had bought into had grown to the point where they really needed their own Human Resources Manager.

Emma figured this could be the career change she needed. She was excited to learn new skills and be part of an industry she is passionate about.

She and her husband’s business, Eco Truss Company, employs nearly 50 people at two factories in Invermay and Cambridge.

“With the building industry being as busy as it is, the managers were starting to struggle to keep up with anything HR related, and our staff probably weren’t getting the listening ear they needed.” Emma explained.

To work as an HR Manager she not only needed to learn her new skills, but needed to earn a qualification in the field. She did her research on when and how to study and thought the Certificate IV in Human Resource Management at TasTAFE would be the right fit for her.

A new offering by TasTAFE, Emma was the very first student to graduate from the course.

“As I studied each module of this course it made me look at each area of the business and make plans that I could implement straight away.”

“I have been able to recruit with confidence, conduct performance reviews, implement improvement plans and oversee workplace health and safety”.

Emma said she owed a lot of thanks to her teacher Chris Griffin for her success in her new role.

“While doing this course Chris has been such a wealth of knowledge and has been able to share and give advice from his own personal HR experience.”

While she has already earned her Certificate IV, Emma is planning to continue studying with TasTAFE.

“One thing I have learnt is that HR knowledge never stops and my next few courses to complement my role are a mental health first aid and health and safety representative course.”

“For anyone looking for a meaningful change or thinking about HR, I would strongly recommend this course. I’m sad it’s all over as I loved every bit of it”.
